Murkowski Shares Independence Day Message with Alaskans

Senator: We Must Protect the Revolutionary Ideas America Was Founded O

Senator Lisa Murkowski today commemorated the 4th of July by sharing her thoughts on the importance of the date with Alaskans:

“238 years ago, a group of courageous and brilliant men put their names and fates on the line to ensure that their children and grandchildren – and us, two centuries later – could live in a nation that values the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These were truly revolutionary concepts at the time, and are ideas that we must defend and protect vigilantly today. Many people in this world, at this very second, are fighting for these liberties that we sometimes take for granted. As we celebrate the 4th of July, it’s important that we take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the precious values that our country represents.

“While we enjoy festivities today, we need to keep in mind those who are risking their lives to safeguard our freedom.  Men and women in uniform are serving bravely overseas, guarding our shores, protecting our interests abroad, and defending our skies here at home. These are fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, friends, and loved ones who are enduring tremendous sacrifice to secure the blessings of liberty. I am thankful for these brave people, and their families, who have to live with empty spots at the dinner table, missed birthdays, and absence from special moments like a child’s first steps or a sibling’s graduation.

“As Alaskans, we honor our veterans, the sacrifices they’ve made, and the freedoms they fought for. We also thank the millions of Americans over the years who have embodied and defended the liberties and freedoms that we all enjoy.

“Every day, but especially on this Independence Day, I am honored to represent the great state of Alaska in the United States Senate.”
