Murkowski announces stimulus funding for health center services expansion in Alaska

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced today that Alaska will receive $3.6 million in stimulus law funding to expand services at 26 community health centers across the state.

 

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that $338 million would be available nationwide for community health center service expansion under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or stimulus law.

 

The department said that grantees submitted plans explaining how the grants would be used. Service expansion could include adding new providers, expanding hours of operations or expanding services.

 

HHS said the grants will be distributed to 1,128 federally qualified health center grantees nationwide and that health centers will use the funds over the next two years to create or retain some 6,400 health center jobs.

 

HHS projected the funding for Alaska would result in 87 new or retained jobs and affect  an estimated 16,629 new patients and 7,446 new uninsured patients.

 

Health centers deliver preventive and primary care services to patients regardless of their ability to pay; charges for services are set according to income. Health centers served more than 16 million patients in 2007, about 40 percent of whom had no health insurance, according to HHS.
