“Martin Luther King Jr. Day provides us a special opportunity, one in which we can come together, as friends and neighbors, as we reflect on the purpose with which Dr. King lived his life. I remain inspired by Dr. King’s commitment to peace in his pursuit of justice and equality for all.

“Over fifty years ago, during the March on Washington, Dr. King shared his dream and faith with us; that we as a country “will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” The history of civil rights in this country affirms Dr. King’s dream; the power of togetherness and brotherhood; our nation’s greatest strength, the ability of its citizens to come together on behalf of one another.

“While Dr. King’s dream was central to the African-American struggle for equality in the face of persistent racial discrimination, it was also a call to action for each of us, regardless of race - to rise above hatred and intolerance - to embrace our oneness.

“Before us today is an opportunity to lock arms and recommit ourselves to the dream and legacy of Dr. King. I encourage each of you to carry on the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a proud American, committed to the proposition that we come from many places and many traditions but as Americans we are one and equal.”
