Murkowski Statement on the Passing of Former Anchorage Mayor George Sullivan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, issued the following statement on the passing of former Anchorage Mayor George Sullivan:

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of George Sullivan. George’s accomplishments live on as examples of a life dedicated to public service.

“George worked tirelessly for our state. I recall George when he represented Alaska in Washington during congressional consideration of the Alaska lands act that eventually passed in 1980. At that time, I was working as an aide for the Alaska Legislature in Juneau and found George to truly be an inspiration. He would light up a room in Juneau and influence legislation simply with a few words of wisdom.

“George did not speak to hear himself talk, but everyone listened when he spoke. That was because everyone who knew George knew he was a straight shooter; a totally honest, fair, dedicated and hard-working man of outstanding judgment. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word.

George was truly was one of Alaska’s original pioneers; a giant who will be missed. But his many accomplishments will live on forever. But mostly his good humor, wisdom and selflessness will be what many Alaskans remember about the man who will always be called, Mr. Mayor.

I offer my deepest condolences to all of his children and grandchildren.”
