Shutdown, Working to Open Government

Friends, Many Alaskans that I've heard from in the last few days are concerned and frustrated about the government shutdown, especially about how it will impact their daily lives. Though you may have already seen stories touching on this topic in the paper, online and on TV around Alaska, I'd like to share the information I have in hopes of helping you in every way possible. Each government agency is required to implement contingency plans for operating during a shutdown, meaning agencies' pla… Continue Reading

Friends, As I travel across the state, I'm hearing so many of you boast about our gorgeous Alaskan summer but then conversations quickly turn to issues like energy, the cost of living, and infrastructure. Whether it's the need for roads, building supplies for homes and communities, or affordable energy - I am always listening. Alaska is where I recharge my battery, and each of you plays a part in inspiring me to keep working hard for our state's unique needs. From King… Continue Reading

My plans have me going from Ketchikan to King Cove, Barrow to Unalaska, with dozens of locations in between. Kuskokwim River Fish Camp Visit I had a wonderful weekend on the Kuskokwim River at the end of June, visiting nine fish camps to hear from Alaskans about subsistence fishing. The traditional camps I visited - located near Bethel, Akiak, Akiachak, Kwethluk, Kalskag, Aniak and Chuathbaluk - serve as both an important food source and cultural training ground for many Alaska Natives and their families. Many families spend weeks on end in their fish camps, but high gas prices are impacting some fa… Continue Reading

A Glorious Week Home in Alaska Dear Friends, We are so blessed to live in Alaska, and I am reminded of this each and every time I am home. With the sun shining across the state, I traveled Southcentral and Kodiak at the end of May, and visited places I've never been to before. I am so grateful to have shared boat rides, hikes, meals, and conversations with you. My time with you grounds me in the issues that matter to Alaska, and set my priorities straight during the times that I can't be wit… Continue Reading

Friends, I had such a great time in the state last week. It's always good to be home and though the calendar shows that spring is on its way, the snow throughout the state reminded us that we live in an Arctic nation. Here are some of the highlights of my visit to Fairbanks, Anchorage, Ketchikan, Delta and Glennallen. Congratulations Graduates of 2013 It's that time of year again, when we salute our family members and neighbors for crossing that significant and meaningful threshold of graduat… Continue Reading

Alaska, After a busy Easter work period back home in Alaska, I'm now back in Washington, D.C. I would like to thank the hundreds of Alaskans I was able to personally speak to and work with while home - your time and input is truly appreciated. While I was able to visit and discuss issues and policies with folks from across the state, I did unfortunately have to miss a few scheduled events due to an awful bout of the flu. I'm glad to be back to full speed! Here's a quick look-back at some of t… Continue Reading

Iditarod I recently returned from participating in the ceremonial start of the 41st Annual Iditarod Sled Dog race, where few words can describe the sights and sounds of 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. Thousands of Alaskans, young and old, filled the streets on the foggy March morning to catch a glimpse of the 65 mushers making their way north to Nome. This Alaskan tradition is one of my favorite times of year to catch up with friends and listen to what Alaskans have on their minds. I will be… Continue Reading

Energy Trip to Asia Earlier this month, I traveled to Asia to meet with Taiwanese and Japanese officials to discuss trade opportunities for Alaska's natural gas. We in Alaska are blessed with an abundance of natural gas but challenged with overcoming the transportation costs of delivering our gas to market. During my meetings, officials from both Japan and Taiwan expressed a strong interest in securing a long-term, stable supply of energy. I can confidently say the markets exist there. Portion… Continue Reading

August in Alaska The saying "time flies when you're having fun" truly applied to me this past August in Alaska. I had fun, and I flew a lot! (Nearly 10,000 miles) My travels took me as far south as Metlakatla, as far west as Attu Island on the Aleutian chain, and as far north as Barrow. I thought I would spend this newsletter recapping some of my trips around the state. Sharing Alaska's Energy Options My August journey started with a trip to the North Slope with my Senate colleague John H… Continue Reading

Senator Stevens' "Fatally Mismanaged" Case Earlier this year, I introduced bi-partisan legislation (S. 2197, the Fairness in Disclosure Act of 2012) aimed at eliminating prosecutorial misconduct with regards to discovery rules. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to discuss my bill. Although I do not sit on the Judiciary Committee, they invited me to testify and share my thoughts on this useful and needed reform. Honoring Our Nations Veterans Washington, D.C. - Alaska has more veterans per capita than any other state in the nation, and I am proud that they are such an ingrained part of the Alaskan way of life. Sadly, homelessness, suicide and joblessness are stubbornly high among our veterans. Others suffer in silence wit… Continue Reading
