Senator Murkowski E-Newsletter for the week of July 17, 2014

Greetings, Alaska! A week in the state is good for the mind and body. Over the 4th of July weekend, I was able to escape the heat and humidity in Washington and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine (and showers) from Fairbanks to Wrangell. All over the state people are talking about fishing. My son is on a tender in Bristol Bay and he reports that the season is good, the reds are running in Southcentral and folks are waiting to go dipnetting, but those on the Yukon and Kuskokwim are again disappointed… Continue Reading

Many Alaskans make the trek back to D.C. in March and I was busy with constituent meetings throughout last week. Friends, I spent an unseasonably warm week in Alaska around Martin Luther King Jr. day - it was unlike anything I had ever experienced in Alaska in January. I drove out to Alyeska, hoping to get a day of skiing in but when the temperature was 55 degrees in Indian and Bird Creek I opted for a hike instead. Even with the odd weather pattern, I had a great time visiting with many of you across the state and appreciate each and every one of you for sharing a piece of your daily lives with me. Shutdown, Working to Open Government

Friends, Many Alaskans that I've heard from in the last few days are concerned and frustrated about the government shutdown, especially about how it will impact their daily lives. Though you may have already seen stories touching on this topic in the paper, online and on TV around Alaska, I'd like to share the information I have in hopes of helping you in every way possible. Kuskokwim River Fish Camp Visit I had a wonderful weekend on the Kuskokwim River at the end of June, visiting nine fish camps to hear from Alaskans about subsistence fishing. The traditional camps I visited - located near Bethel, Akiak, Akiachak, Kwethluk, Kalskag, Aniak and Chuathbaluk - serve as both an important food source and cultural training ground for many Alaska Natives and their families. Many families spend weeks on end in their fish camps, but high gas prices are impacting some fa… Continue Reading
